Why, The Table?

Not because God needs a table. But Because we do.

In the Bible, altars are more than structures; they are sacred spaces where heaven met the ordinary. They marked moments of worship, sacrifice, covenant, and consecration—times when people responded to God with gratitude, repentance, or renewed devotion. Each altar stood as a witness to divine intervention in the lives of individuals and nations.

In Scripture, people built altars not because God demanded them, but because something happened.

An encounter.
A turning point.
A moment when words were not enough.

Altars were never about permanence.
They were about presence.

When Noah stepped onto dry ground, he built an altar—not to prove faith, but to respond to mercy. (Genesis 8:20 NIV, Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.)

When Abraham heard God’s voice, he built altars along the way—not once, but repeatedly—marking places of trust, fear, promise, and obedience. (Genesis 12:7 NIV,  The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him, Genesis 12:8 NIV, From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. Genesis 13:18 NIV, So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.)

When Jacob returned to Bethel, he rebuilt an altar—not because God had changed, but because he had. These were not grand structures. ( Genesis 35:7 NIV, There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.)

These were not grand structures.

They were simple, intentional spaces where heaven met the ordinary.
